The outlook on fishing this week looks good on the Big Hole River. We are into the prime of our October fishing in Southwest Montana. The next two weeks will be a perfect time to be here before winter sets into the valley. Streamers, Blue winged olives and nymph fishing has all been working well lately. Anglers streamers of choice have had colors of  black, olive and brown. Sub surface fisherman have been happy with blue winged olives and stonefly patterns. Some locations on the lower river have seen good mayfly hatches however most sections have had minimal surface activity.

It is the best time to listen to the fall sounds and beautiful scenery as you cast for one of the largest trout of the season. Flows on the river remain below average for this time of the year, but you are able to get your boat on all of the sections below Divide fishing access site. Please be aware of the spawning areas and do not walk on beds or fish for trout that are spawning. For the next three weeks you can take advantage of our Fall Special fishing package.

Fall is in full swing in the Big Hole Valley. We are seeing the cottonwoods change to the vibrant yellow/orange and the brown trout are getting into their fall splendor.  Many of the sizable brown trout are getting aggressive towards streamers and nymphs right now. It is a spectacular time to be on the Big Hole and enjoy the cool crisp fall weather before the snow flies. Streamers in the black, olive and brown colors are working the best right now. Currently, you will find hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns on the Big Hole River. Enjoy this great time of the year while the weather stays mild.

Today we have had rainy fall like weather in the Big Hole Valley. The rest of the week looks like perfect, dry and crisp fall like weather. The recent rain has the Big Hole on the rise, which is ideal for getting the river back up to average flows. The river is clear and the flow increase should get the brown trout active and willing to move to streamers. We had tremendous blue winged olive hatches today. Look for these hatches to continue into the week ahead and we should see some mahogany duns thrown into the mix.

The Big Hole is in the late summer/early fall splendor. You will find some trico’s in spot specific areas in the morning and Blue Winged Olives. We are having solid reports of hopper fishing in the afternoon heat on the lower Big Hole River and around the Melrose area. Streamers in the morning hours have been good with olive color patterns and black color patterns. Looks like the dry and warm weather will persist for the week, which will make for some great fishing opportunities.

The Big Hole River has been fishing pretty well lately. We are in the late summer transition to some fall activity. On the warm days you will have trico’s in the mornings and hopper fishing in the afternoons. On the wet cool days we are seeing Blue Winged Olives hatching and some October caddis have been spotted in certain sections of the Big Hole. Streamer fishing has also been working for guys as the brown trout are gearing up for fall activity. Our hopper fishing on the warm days on the lower Big Hole stretches below Melrose has been fantastic lately. Tan Chernobyl’s, Thunder Thigh Hoppers and Morrish hoppers have all been bringing large rainbows to the surface. get your summer fishing in before fall hits us and it’s time to bring the streamers out in full force.

“Hoot-Owl” fishing restrictions have been uplifted on the entire Big Hole River. We currently have no fishing restrictions on the Big Hole River. We have trico’s hatching in the morning and then flying ants in the afternoon along with hopper fishing. We have been having great ant fishing lately. The cooler water temperatures have the fish active the entire day.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

It is terrestrial season on the Big Hole River.  We are having some Spruce Moth activity from Jerry Creek down to Divide. Trico’s have picked up in the mornings and hopper activity has kept our rods bent in the afternoons. Ant patterns are also working well in the afternoon. We are also throwing streamers in the morning hours with success in the deeper pools and shallow riffles.

The recent heat wave has the Big Hole on “Hoot-Owl” restrictions on certain sections of the River. Read in detail below to find out where the “Hoot-Owl” closures are located.

“Hoot-Owl” restrictions prohibit fishing during the hottest times of the day. A hoot-owl restriction prohibiting fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight. the Hoot-owl restriction is currently in effect in the below locations on the Big Hole.

-The Big Hole River From North Fork of the Big Hole River to Dickie Bridge west of Wise River, and from Maidenrock fishing Access Site (FWP site) to the Beaverhead River.

The section that is open to all day fishing with no restrictions is from Dickie Bridge on the Big Hole down to Maiden Rock (FWP) access site. If you need clarification of this location please call the shop 406-412-3463.

The scorching heat has taken a toll on our rivers lately. We are currently needing a cool down on all of our rivers ASAP. Currently, we are having hatches of Trico’s, some PMD’s and caddis. Swinging streamers and soft hackles in the riffles have been working well for us and has been producing some really nice fish. We are having some fish chow hoppers on the grassy agriculture banks below melrose. Our best hopper patters have been low profile leggy creatures. The recent heat wave has the Big Hole on “Hoot-Owl” restrictions on certain sections of the River. Read in detail below to find out where the “Hoot-Owl” closes are located.

In accordance with the directives of both the State of Montana and Silver Bow County, below are the rules for entering the fly shop

  1. No customers with COVID-19 symptoms may enter the fly shop
  2. Only 3 customers may be in the fly shop at one time
  3. Mandatory to practice 6-foot social distancing guidelines while in the fly shop
  4. All customers must sanitize their hands using our provided sanitizer before entering the shop
  5. You are welcome to try on any clothing, but please let us know so that we can sanitize the product when you are finished
  6. Masks are required to be worn in the shop
  7. Restrooms will temporarily be unavailable to the public

Big Hole River Report

The Big Hole is in a transition period from PMD’s and caddis to terrestrials and Trico’s. We are seeing some PMD’s in the morning hours hatching. The hopper fishing below Melrose has been good. We are fishing small hoppers and ant patterns in the size #14, #12 and #10 range. Trico’s have been spotted on some days below Divide. Look for the trico hatch to thicken up this coming week. Streamers fishing and nymphing in the shallow riffle has remained productive for our guides. Spruce Moth’s have not been spotted yet but we should start to see them soon. Flows have remained fantastic lately on the Big Hole. We are still using drift boats from Divide down stream.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

We have been enjoying fantastic fishing on the Big Hole recently. Currently the flows around Melrose are 1,230 cfs. We are having hatches of PMD’s, Caddis, Yellow Sallies and nocturnal stoneflies. Dry fly fishing in the early morning hours on nocturnal stoneflies has been good and then PMD’s around 10:00 am have had the fish looking up. You will have Yellow Sallies midd day and Caddis in the evening. The streamer fishing in the shallow riffles are producing great brown trout right now through the day and even in the bright sun.
