Recommended Equipment
If you need it, we’ve got it. When you come to Southwest Montana for your next fly fishing vacation, you can get everything on your list at the Sunrise Fly Shop. We carry a full selection of Patagonia and Simms equipment and clothing, Ross and Abel reels, Scientific Anglers and Rio products, Winston and Scott fly rods.
Fly Rod and Reel – 5 and 6 weight rods and reels are the most commonly used fly rods. These weights are best suited for fly fishing our rivers. A 4 weight can be a fun rod to have for smaller dries like tricos.
Flies – The flies you will use on your guided trip will depend on the time of year you plan your fly fishing vacation. We have all of the flies at the shop that you’ll need, but if you want to tie some of your own, or have specific patterns that you would like to throw, give us a call and we can make recommendations for the specific time of your trip.
Waders – Except for the hottest months of the summer, waders are a necessity for fly fishing in Montana. A pair of waterproof, breathable waders will give you the protection you need while keeping you dry and comfortable.
Wading Boots – Wading in any river isn’t easy. Having a pair of boots or sandals specifically designed for fly fishing makes a difficult task a lot easier.
Rain Jacket – Montana’s Weather can be extremely unpredictable. A beautiful sunny morning can turn into thunderstorms in the afternoon. A waterproof jacket is an absolute must.
Layers – During the cooler months, layering your clothing is an excellent way to ensure your comfort while on the river. The beauty of this simple concept is that it allows you to make quick adjustments based on changes in the weather and temperature. Ideal layers include a base layer, an insulation layer, and your rain jacket. Fingerless gloves and a stocking cap are also something to consider bringing.
Hat – Any kind of hat that will help to keep the sun out of your eyes is a great idea.
Polarized Sun Glasses – This accessory is absolutely essential. Glasses with polarized lenses help to eliminate glare and drastically improve your vision while on the water.
Sunscreen – Nobody likes getting off the river looking like a ripe tomato. We recommend liberally applying sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater.
Fishing License – Montana law requires all anglers 12 and older to have a license. You can either get your license at the shop or you can get it online at https://ols.fwp.mt.gov
Camera – You’ll definitely want to photograph the trout and the amazing scenery. If you do bring a camera, make sure to have a waterproof case of some kind to protect it.
Great Attitude – Come ready to have a phenomenal time on the river!
