Big Hole River Fishing Report

We have been enjoying fantastic fishing on the Big Hole recently. Currently the flows around Melrose are 1,230 cfs. We are having hatches of PMD’s, Caddis, Yellow Sallies and nocturnal stoneflies. Dry fly fishing in the early morning hours on nocturnal stoneflies has been good and then PMD’s around 10:00 am have had the fish looking up. You will have Yellow Sallies midd day and Caddis in the evening. The streamer fishing in the shallow riffles are producing great brown trout right now through the day and even in the bright sun.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Big Hole is fishing very well right now. We are seeing flows around 1,700cfs in Melrose today. The lower stretches of the river are seeing nocturnal stoneflies hatching, PMD’s, Caddis and Yellow Sallies. The best opportunity for stone fly dries is getting out early in the morning or late in the evening on the lower river. We should to see nocturnal stoneflies in the coming week up in the Maiden Rock Canyon. Streamers have been working very well in the shallow fast riffles. Sculpin and minnow patterns are working well for streamers. You will find pods of fish rising to PMD’s in the morning hours and caddis in the evenings. River conditions are ideal right now for great fishing on the Big Hole.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

Here we are in July and the Big Hole is over 4,000cfs. June was a rollercoaster month and we are looking forward to dropping flows on the Big Hole River. The river has crested from this last rain/snow event. It looks like the weather is going to dry out and the Big Hole will be in fantastic shape for the month of July. We have hatches of Golden Stone’s, PMD’s, Caddis, Drakes and Yellow Sallies. When conditions are right the dry fly fishing the next several days should be stellar. The streamer fisherman are excited having these high flows to chuck streamers. Look for the Big Hole to continue to drop and fishing to get very good from Maiden Rock down stream.

Big Hole River Salmonfly Hatch Update

The Big Hole has been fishing fantastic lately. The Salmonfly hatch has not let us down one bit. Some of the best dry fly fishing of the year has been had lately depending on the time of day and the stretch of river that you are on. You will find Salmonflies and golden stones hatching below East Bank and all the way down into the Maiden Rock Canyon. We also have PMD’s and caddis hatching throughout the day. Streamers have also been good in the evening hours. Looks like we are getting moisture early this week and then some drier weather later in the week. The river is currently at a stable flow and visibility is around 4 feet.

The Salmonfly Hatch has started below Melrose. Our guides had some of the best fishing of their careers yesterday below Melrose. I’m sure everyone has heard the saying, “should have been here yesterday.” Don’t worry if you weren’t you haven’t missed the hatch above Melrose. We have spotted the Salmonflies below Melrose but stretches above Melrose have not had adult Salmonflies yet. With this cooler weather and increase in river flows the hatch will take a pause until our next warm up. Looks like mid to late week it will be game on! Salmonfly nymphs are staged up near the banks in the Maiden Rock canyon waiting to hatch. You will want to be here in the next 10 days to enjoy the Salmonfly hatch.

We have seen peak flows on the Big Hole River this week from runoff. So what does that mean? Salmonflies will be here soon, in fact any day now we will see the big bugs below Melrose. Flows have dropped below 5,000cfs at the Melrose gauge. Once the Melrose gauge gets below 4,000cfs your typical willow lines and banks will be fishable. Water temperatures are right in line for the salmonfly nymphs to be moving near the banks. We have been out the last few days below Melrose and we are picking up fish on salmonfly nymphs. Any day now we will be throwing massive foam flies into the willows and banks expecting explosive eats on the surface. Once the hatch starts we will let you know. Streamers and nymphs are the name of the game right.

2020 Salmonfly Fest has been canceled due to the risk of Covid-19. We are going to be having some great raffle items to help celebrate the annual event. Stay tuned for raffle items coming this week announced on instagram and on our fishing reports page.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

We are in the middle of a caddis frenzy on the Big Hole. The river has dropped to a great level and cleared, with over 2 feet of visibility. You will find the best caddis dry fly fishing towards evening or on a cloudy overcast day. Around Melrose you will have to find back eddies or back channels to fish the dries. On the upper Big Hole where we have less volume of water and the gradient is less, you will have fish up eating caddis when conditions are right on the slow grassy banks. The streamer fishing has been good river wide lately and the nymph anglers have been cleaning up with heavy tippet.

Currently we are in Stage 1 restrictions due to Covid-19. Governor Bullock announced yesterday that the state of Montana will move to Stage 2 Restrictions on June 1st. Big news for us outfitters since this will remove travel restrictions and 14-day quarantine requirements in Montana.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

Due to rain and snowmelt the Big Hole is not looking like a good option this morning. The river has come up about 1,000 cfs in 24 hours at the Mudd Creek gauge site. Today is a great day to head to tailwaters to fish or take a risky shot to catch a fish on the Big Hole. Conditions should improve soon. We will keep you posted as the river comes into better shape.

Currently we are in Stage 1 restrictions due to Covid-19. Governor Bullock announced yesterday that the state of Montana will move to Stage 2 Restrictions on June 1st. Big news for us outfitters since this will remove travel restrictions and 14-day quarantine requirements in Montana. 

COVID-19 Phase 1 Social Distancing and Sanitization Shop Regulations

In accordance with the directives of both the State of Montana and Silver Bow County, below are the rules for entering the fly shop

  1. No customers with COVID-19 symptoms may enter the fly shop
  2. Only 3 customers may be in the fly shop at one time
  3. Mandatory to practice 6-foot social distancing guidelines while in the fly shop
  4. All customers must sanitize their hands using our provided sanitizer before entering the shop
  5. Before touching any flies, please get a pair of rubber gloves from an employee
  6. You are welcome to try on any clothing, but please let us know so that we can sanitize the product when you are finished
  7. Please wear a facial mask
  8. Restrooms will temporarily be unavailable to the public
  9. Fishing Licenses have to be purchased online. Click Here to purchase
  10. Credit Card only Purchases.

We have a Pick-Up window for customers that would prefer doing take-out orders

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Big Hole is currently in great shape. Clarity is around 2 feet and currently the river is stable. Streamer fishing in the canyon sections and lower river has been very good for anglers this week. We should see the fishing continue to be good into the weekend as we have a pretty stable weather pattern. Caddis should start hatching on the lower Big Hole any day now. We have seen March brown’s hatching and some Blue Winged Olives. The best fishing has remained subsurface with nymphs and streamers lately. Pat’s stoneflies, jig head pheasant tail nymphs and streamers have been the ticket.

If residents or non residents leave the state of Montana and then come back into Montana they are required to self isolate and quarantine for 14 days before being able to visit a retail store or go on a guided fishing trip. Once the ongoing quarantine travel restriction requirements have been met, guides and outfitters may offer their services provided they adhere to social distancing guidelines and sanitation protocols.  Governor Bullock said “While we love our visitors, we would ask that you not come visit while Montanans are watching out for one another by staying at home. This is important not only to protect our health care system, but also to protect against the spread of COVID-19. As of today, travel from another state or country is the most common known source of COVID-19 infections in Montana. I am asking anyone who is in Montana and has recently traveled from another state or country to do the right thing and self-quarantine for 14 days,” The Directive applies both to Montana residents and non-residents entering the state for non-work-related purposes.
  • In establishments where customers wait in a line, non-household customers should remain physically distanced.
  • Physical Distancing of 6 feet must be maintained between non-congregate customers. This will require the reduction in capacity of our fly shop down to 3 customers at a time.
  • Customer and employees must sanitize their hands before entering the retail store.

Phase 1 and 2 Recreational Guidelines

  • Public lands, fishing access sites, and parks are encouraged to continue to provide outdoor recreation opportunities for local and regional users provided that users can adhere to strict social distancing guidelines and facilities follow frequent sanitizing protocols. Areas that cannot practicably implement social distancing requirements or sanitation needs will remain closed. Limited campground offerings, group-use facilities and playgrounds, may be opened at the discretion of local and state managers. Local, state and federal officials are strongly encouraged to coordinate on all reopening decisions. Guides and outfitters may offer services consistent with any ongoing quarantine travel restrictions provided they adhere to social distancing guidelines and sanitation protocols. Visitors should check the status of any closures and restrictions before traveling.

Big Hole Fishing Report

Fishing has picked up on the Big Hole. We are in a great window of spring fishing for the next several days. We have a stable weather pattern and the river has dropped and cleared. Fishing around Melrose has been good. We have not had dry fly fishing but the streamer bite and nymph action has been very productive. Look for the slower seems and edges of banks and you will find the fish. Our best streamers have been dark colored and the yellow favorites for the Big Hole. A few skwallas are still kicking around but we will be waiting for Caddis on the lower river soon.
