“Hoot-Owl” fishing restrictions have been uplifted on the entire Big Hole River. We currently have no fishing restrictions on the Big Hole River. We have trico’s hatching in the morning and then flying ants in the afternoon along with hopper fishing. We have been having great ant fishing lately. The cooler water temperatures have the fish active the entire day.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

It is terrestrial season on the Big Hole River.  We are having some Spruce Moth activity from Jerry Creek down to Divide. Trico’s have picked up in the mornings and hopper activity has kept our rods bent in the afternoons. Ant patterns are also working well in the afternoon. We are also throwing streamers in the morning hours with success in the deeper pools and shallow riffles.

The recent heat wave has the Big Hole on “Hoot-Owl” restrictions on certain sections of the River. Read in detail below to find out where the “Hoot-Owl” closures are located.

“Hoot-Owl” restrictions prohibit fishing during the hottest times of the day. A hoot-owl restriction prohibiting fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight. the Hoot-owl restriction is currently in effect in the below locations on the Big Hole.

-The Big Hole River From North Fork of the Big Hole River to Dickie Bridge west of Wise River, and from Maidenrock fishing Access Site (FWP site) to the Beaverhead River.

The section that is open to all day fishing with no restrictions is from Dickie Bridge on the Big Hole down to Maiden Rock (FWP) access site. If you need clarification of this location please call the shop 406-412-3463.

The scorching heat has taken a toll on our rivers lately. We are currently needing a cool down on all of our rivers ASAP. Currently, we are having hatches of Trico’s, some PMD’s and caddis. Swinging streamers and soft hackles in the riffles have been working well for us and has been producing some really nice fish. We are having some fish chow hoppers on the grassy agriculture banks below melrose. Our best hopper patters have been low profile leggy creatures. Big Hole River Report

The Big Hole is in a transition period from PMD’s and caddis to terrestrials and Trico’s. We are seeing some PMD’s in the morning hours hatching. The hopper fishing below Melrose has been good. We are fishing small hoppers and ant patterns in the size #14, #12 and #10 range. Trico’s have been spotted on some days below Divide. Look for the trico hatch to thicken up this coming week. Streamers fishing and nymphing in the shallow riffle has remained productive for our guides. Spruce Moth’s have not been spotted yet but we should start to see them soon. Flows have remained fantastic lately on the Big Hole. We are still using drift boats from Divide down stream.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

We have been enjoying fantastic fishing on the Big Hole recently. Currently the flows around Melrose are 1,230 cfs. We are having hatches of PMD’s, Caddis, Yellow Sallies and nocturnal stoneflies. Dry fly fishing in the early morning hours on nocturnal stoneflies has been good and then PMD’s around 10:00 am have had the fish looking up. You will have Yellow Sallies midd day and Caddis in the evening. The streamer fishing in the shallow riffles are producing great brown trout right now through the day and even in the bright sun.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Big Hole is fishing very well right now. We are seeing flows around 1,700cfs in Melrose today. The lower stretches of the river are seeing nocturnal stoneflies hatching, PMD’s, Caddis and Yellow Sallies. The best opportunity for stone fly dries is getting out early in the morning or late in the evening on the lower river. We should to see nocturnal stoneflies in the coming week up in the Maiden Rock Canyon. Streamers have been working very well in the shallow fast riffles. Sculpin and minnow patterns are working well for streamers. You will find pods of fish rising to PMD’s in the morning hours and caddis in the evenings. River conditions are ideal right now for great fishing on the Big Hole.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

Here we are in July and the Big Hole is over 4,000cfs. June was a rollercoaster month and we are looking forward to dropping flows on the Big Hole River. The river has crested from this last rain/snow event. It looks like the weather is going to dry out and the Big Hole will be in fantastic shape for the month of July. We have hatches of Golden Stone’s, PMD’s, Caddis, Drakes and Yellow Sallies. When conditions are right the dry fly fishing the next several days should be stellar. The streamer fisherman are excited having these high flows to chuck streamers. Look for the Big Hole to continue to drop and fishing to get very good from Maiden Rock down stream.

You will find Salmonflies and golden stones hatching below East Bank and all the way down into the Maiden Rock Canyon. We also have PMD’s and caddis hatching throughout the day. Streamers have also been good in the evening hours. Looks like we are getting moisture early this week and then some drier weather later in the week. The river is currently at a stable flow and visibility is around 4 feet.

  8. Restrooms will temporarily be unavailable to the public

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Salmonfly Hatch has started below Melrose. Our guides had some of the best fishing of their careers yesterday below Melrose. I’m sure everyone has heard the saying, “should have been here yesterday.” Don’t worry if you weren’t you haven’t missed the hatch above Melrose. We have spotted the Salmonflies below Melrose but stretches above Melrose have not had adult Salmonflies yet. With this cooler weather and increase in river flows the hatch will take a pause until our next warm up. Looks like mid to late week it will be game on! Salmonfly nymphs are staged up near the banks in the Maiden Rock canyon waiting to hatch. You will want to be here in the next 10 days to enjoy the Salmonfly hatch.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

We have seen peak flows on the Big Hole River this week from runoff. So what does that mean? Salmonflies will be here soon, in fact any day now we will see the big bugs below Melrose. Flows have dropped below 5,000cfs at the Melrose gauge. Once the Melrose gauge gets below 4,000cfs your typical willow lines and banks will be fishable. Water temperatures are right in line for the salmonfly nymphs to be moving near the banks. We have been out the last few days below Melrose and we are picking up fish on salmonfly nymphs. Any day now we will be throwing massive foam flies into the willows and banks expecting explosive eats on the surface. Once the hatch starts we will let you know. Streamers and nymphs are the name of the game right.

2020 Salmonfly Fest has been canceled due to the risk of Covid-19. We are going to be having some great raffle items to help celebrate the annual event. Stay tuned for raffle items coming this week announced on instagram and on our fishing reports page.
