Dry fly fishing has been stellar lately on the Big Hole River.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”7″][eye_text]

Dry fly fishing has been stellar lately on the Big Hole River. The Spruce Moth hatch from Jerry Creek down to the Maiden Rock Canyon has been excellent. Your best dry fly fishing on Spruce Moth’s has been from around 8 am – 2:00 pm. We are seeing some trico’s but the hatch has not taken off yet. Look for trico’s to be in the ball game in the next week or so on the Big Hole River. The lower Big Hole has been the place to be for decent hopper fishing. We are seeing a lot of hoppers on the banks, so it could really heat up this August for hopper fishing. Streamer fishing has been good in the fast riffles.

Fishing on the Big Hole is starting to heat up again.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”7″][eye_text]

Fishing on the Big Hole is starting to heat up again. We have been seeing the first signs of Spruce Moths on the water. The Spruce Moth is not widespread on the river but several banks in the canyon are seeing activity on the surface. Besides spruce moths we are seeing PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, and some caddis. The best fishing is from about 8:00 am – 3:00pm. If you have a warm afternoon please watch the water temperature. If temperatures reach 68 degrees please give the trout a break. Flows remain pretty good for this time of year on the Big Hole. The Maiden rock gauge is 762cfs and the Melrose gauge is 634cfs.

A fantastic trout caught in the Big Hole Canyon this week

[/eye_text][/eye_column][/eye_row]

You will find hatches of Tricos in the morning and then terrestrials in the afternoon on the Big Hole.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

You will find hatches of Tricos in the morning and then terrestrials in the afternoon on the Big Hole. We have had fantastic hatches of Tricos with some large brown trout podding up and sipping dries in the morning. The spruce moth hatch is done but you will find flying ants and some hoppers in the afternoons. Streamers in the shallow riffles have been producing nice fish. We have also been doing well with a small dropper off the back of the streamer. #16 Psycho Mayflies, #16 Little Spankers and #16 Micro Mayflies have been good dropper nymphs. We have been floating the river with clients in the Jerry Creek Section and the Maiden Rock section of the Big Hole. The wade fisherman have easy access to the river due to the lower flows right now. Hopper activity has been good in the Glen to Notch section of the Big Hole. Water temperatures are back in the safe zone on the Big Hole due to cooler night / day time temperatures.

Big Hole Report

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

The Spruce Moth hatch has been phenomenal this year.  As good of a spruce moth hatch as we have seen in several years.  Combine that with a really strong Trico hatch and we have seen amazing dry fly fishing on the Big Hole River.  As good as the dry fly fishing has been, please remember we do have closures on the river.  Sections I, IV, and V are closed to fishing, but The Big Hole River is open without any restrictions from Dickey Bridge down to FWP Maiden Rock. Please note Maiden Rock FWP is the lower Maiden Rock, which is out of the canyon a few miles upstream from Melrose. Here is a map to help you with the closures http://bhwc.org/fish-water/river-conditions/

Hatches on the Big Hole consist of Tricos

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

Hatches on the Big Hole consist of Tricos, Spruce Moths, PMD’s and hoppers. You will find the Trico hatch starting around 10:00 am. The Spruce Moth hatch has been weak lately but it should get better as day time highs get into the 80’s this week. Nymphing has been consistent in the afternoons. We have been dropping either a #10 Pat’s Stone or a #16 Flashback Pheasant tail off our hoppers. Other droppers that have been working well are #16 Psycho Mayflies, #16 Shimmer Nymphs, and #16 Red Copper John’s. If you like to drag streamers, you will have success in the shallow riffles with a #6 McCune’s Sculpin or Mini loop sculpins.

Spruce Moth Hatch

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

Dry fly fishing has picked up the last few days and should get dynamite this week. From 8 am till about 1:00 pm is the best dry fly fishing opportunity. You will have hatches of PMD’s Trico’s and Spruce Moths. Yes, we said Spruce Moths. You will find the Spruce Moth hatch from Jerry Creek access down to Maiden Rock. We have seen a good number of Moths hitting the water. For periods of the morning the fish have keyed into them and then at other times they have ignored the fluttering Moth’s on the surface. The trout should start to key into the Moth activity as they see them on a daily basis. Small hoppers in the afternoon have the fish looking up. We also have had good streamer fishing in the shallow riffles. Our best streamers have been olive/Tan Sculpins.

Big Hole River Fly Fishing Report

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

Heavy rain over the last 4 days has the river on a nice bump in flows.  The river has remained clear and fishing well above Melrose.  Below Melrose a couple creeks have put the river off color.  The clarity below Melrose has improved this morning and should fish fine today below Melrose.  We have Trico’s hatching in the morning and then we are moving to hoppers, Ant’s and Beetles in the afternoon.  Nymphs that have been working are #10 girdle bugs, #16 Red Copper John’s, #18 Zebra Midges, #16 Batman nymphs.  Still no Spruce Moth’s, it is looking like we will not have a Spruce Moth hatch this year on the Big Hole River.  Time to get your hard boat back out.  The flows are fantastic on the Big Hole.

Big Hole River August Fishing Report

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

Fishing remains good on the Big Hole River.  The hatches are a bit in a transition period on the Big Hole River.  PMD’s are waning and we are moving into Trico’s and Hoppers.  We are starting to see Trico’s on the lower Big Hole River and below Melrose.  Hopper fishing has also started to pick up on the lower Big Hole River.  Hatches in the Maiden Rock Canyon have been bleak.  We have done very well on nymphs in the Canyon but dry fly fishing has been poor.  Look for the dry fly fishing to pick up this week.  We should see more trico’s around and the hoppers are starting to bounce around the grassy banks.  We have not seen any Spruce Moth’s yet.  If we are going to get a Spruce Moth hatch we should see them in the next ten days.  Our Big Hole River Guides will will keep you posted.
