Big Hole River Salmonfly Hatch

Summer is here and we all know what the month of June starts with, the anticipation of the Salmonfly hatch! Scorching hot temperatures the last few days has the river on the rise with about 2 -3 feet of visibility. Below average flows will make for a fishable Salmonfly hatch this year. We have not spotted any stoneflies yet but the hatch will start on the lower stretches below Melrose soon. When we spot the bugs we will let you know. We have been doing well on Salmonfly nymphs, caddis, and various mayfly jig head nymphs lately. Streamer colors of choice has been black or natural colors.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

The Beaverhead River has been fishing well lately. We have been fishing from the dam down to Grasshopper Creek. Below Grasshopper creek is off color due to snowmelt. We are not finding dry fly fishing but the nymphing has been consistent. We are doing well with sow bugs, scuds and jig head nymphs. Flows out of Clark Canyon Reservoir are low right now. The wade fishing has been easy in all areas of the river.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

We just received a much needed snow/rain event in Southwest Montana and particularly in the Big Hole Valley. The River has come up from the storm but is now on the drop. We are noticing the river starting to clear on the edges today. As the flows continue to come down the river will clear and warm up. Fishing is going to get good the next few days. Once water temperatures get back into the 50’s we will see caddis hatching. The San Juan worm fishing will be great this week due to the recent bump in flows. The holiday weekend fishing should be great as the warmer weather arrives and the river continues to drop. Streamer fishing will improve as the displaced sculpin look for holding water.

Fishing has picked back up the last few days and should continue to improve as the river drops and clears. We currently have 2 feet of visibility and with the dropping flows fish are comfortably feeding. You can find hatches of Skwalla’s and March brown’s on the water during the day. Subsurface has remained good with some dry fly action throughout the day. Streamers have been pulling some nice fish on the lower Big Hole. Always feel free to call the shop for the latest report as Spring conditions can change quickly.

Spring fishing has been very good recently on the Big Hole River. Water temperatures are in the low 50’s, which means skwallas are hatching. River flows are currently around 1,000cfs and clarity is great. We have seen the skwalla hatch move up into the Maiden Rock Canyon. Our guides were able to fish single dry flies this week and bring up plenty of fish on skwallas. We are also seeing March brown mayflies and midges. We have been floating the Maiden Rock Canyon stretch and reaches below Melrose. For most up to date information please give us a call as spring conditions can change quickly.

The Big Hole River is in great spring time shape. Clarity is 3 feet today and fishing has been good. We have had Skwalla dry fly fishing in the afternoons below Melrose. As the water warms we should see skwalla activity up in the Maiden Rock Canyon any day now. We have been fishing a skwalla dry with about a 2 foot dropper in the morning and then fishing single dries in the afternoons below Melrose. Above Melrose it is mainly still a nymph and streamer game. Our best streamers have been dark colors and getting them on the bottom of the run. Time to get out there while this good spring opportunity is upon us.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

The Beaverhead has been fishing well below Pipe Organ Bridge. Flows are low so leave the boat home and wade fish. We have done well nymphing sow bugs, blue winged olive nymphs and caddis nymphs. Remember that the upper Beaverhead River is closed from the Dam to Pip Organ Bridge until the 3rd Saturday of May to let the rainbows Spawn. Below Grasshopper Creek has been muddy so call for up to date information on the clarity down below Grasshopper Creek.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Big Hole River is coming into shape from last week’s ice off event. Flows in Melrose are around 1,200cfs and we currently have good visibility in the river. Water temperatures are cold but look for them to improve come this weekend as day time air temperatures get into the 50’s. Once our water temperatures get back into the mid 40’s look for skwalla adults to start showing themselves below Melrose. The upper river is still not ready for fishing with major ice on the boat ramps. We will be concentrating our fishing from Maiden Rock downstream to the lower Big Hole River. During the week it will be nymphing stone flies and worms and come this weekend we should have some dry fly fishing. It is shaping up to be an excellent window for spring fishing.

Big Hole River Fishing Report : Ice off

The ice has just come off the upper Big Hole River. We had a massive surge of water yesterday coming downstream. The river went from about 1,000cfs to over 3,000cfs in one huge surge. With this said, the river is not fishing and we will keep you updated when things improve. It will take sometime for the river to clear up and start fishing again. Big Hole Fishing Report: Shop Opens March 26th for the Spring Season

Spring is here despite the recent snowstorm and cold temperatures. We are gearing up for the season with clients arriving this weekend. The fly shop will open March, 26th for the 2021 season. The outlook looks promising for the weekend with temperatures in the mid 50’s. We have been out scouting the lower Big Hole and the fish are looking healthy. You will find midges hatching and mainly subsurface activity. We have done well nymphing and streamer fishing during the heat of the afternoon when water temperatures are at the peak. Slow stripping streamers in the slowest water in the runs has produced the best action. We are looking forward to a great spring season. New inventory is coming in the shop daily and we have plenty of great new flies and gear to check out.
