Big Hole & Beaverhead River Fishing Report

The Big Hole River got muddy last week due to warm spring like weather. The upper river ice started to break up and caused the visibility to diminish. This week we are seeing freezing temperatures and some snow. The river has dropped and is clearing. We should have a good window coming up for fishing before the next significant warm up, which might bump the flows and create poor clarity. You will find the Skwalla fishing productive the next few days and leading into the weekend. Streamer fishing will also be good in the afternoons. our preferable color is olive, yellow or natural.

The beaverhead River is fishing well. Remember you can only fish below Pip Organ Bridge until the 3rd Saturday of May. We are seeing Blue Winged Olive hatches, Midge activity and decent streamer fishing.

The store front is closed due to our Governors order during this pandemic, but you can purchase merchandise and flies online. Call us anytime as well. We are here to help and we can arrange flies being picked up when you come to the Big Hole or we can ship them to your house.  Shuttles are also not being run at this time due to the Governor’s order. So when you come to fish you will have to bring a shuttle rig with you.

COVID-19 Update

On Thursday March 26 Montana’s Governor Steve Bullock issued a Directive requiring Montanans to stay home and temporarily closes all nonessential businesses and operations to curtail the spread of COVID-19. The order goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. on March 28.

In compliance with this directive from our Governor, Sunrise Fly Shop will be closing its retail store, shuttle business, lodging, and guide service until April 10th. It is vital that we all take the appropriate precautions to stay safe and to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

As we all know, COVID-19 is a major health risk and everyone needs to do their part to help stop the spread of the virus.

As important as it is to stay informed about the Coronavirus and take steps to protect yourself, it is also healthy to have an outlet. Fishing, if done while practicing safe social distancing, is a great way to escape from all of the stresses these unprecedented times can cause.

We here at the Sunrise Fly Shop want to help you get all of the gear that you might need for your spring fishing in Southwest Montana, but in order to help stop the spread of the virus, we will need to conduct business just a little differently.

FLY SHOP

In an effort to protect our customer, our employees, and our families, the fly shop will not be open in a traditional retail store capacity. All orders will need to be placed either online or over the phone. The shop will be open starting on March 28th for Online Store Pick Up and Telephone Orders Only (406) 835-3474. Coming later this week we will have preselected “flies of the week”. These prepackaged flies will be hand selected by our shop staff for the week’s conditions and will be available for online and phone orders. We will be happy to hand select any of our flies in stock for store pickup or mail order. Keep a look out for these fly packages starting in April. Nearly all of our products will be available online, but if you are looking for a specific item that you don’t see online, just give the shop a call and we can put together an order over the phone.

FISHING REPORT

The Beaverhead River is in good shape. Remember it is closed to fishing from Clark Canyon Dam down to Pipe Organ Bridge until the 3rd Saturday of May. The river is fishing well below Pipe Organ Bridge. On the warmer days we are seeing great midge hatches. Sub surface we are doing well on midge nymphs. For about an hour or two the streamer fishing can be good with a deep slow moving streamer.

Reminder: Coming in April we will have preselected “flies of the week”. These prepackaged flies will be hand selected by our shop staff for the week’s conditions and will be available for online and phone orders. Keep a look out for these fly packages starting in April.

Because of the colder water temperatures we haven’t seen many skwallas yet, but during the warmer parts of the day the subsurface fishing has been solid. Most of the fish have come in the slower tail-outs on a San Juan Worm, Pats Rubberleg, BWO nymph, or a Zebra Midge. 2:00 to 6:00 has been the most productive time of the day.

January Update – Simms Sale items – Spring Special

It is late January here on the Beaverhead River. The Beaverhead River is one of the few fisheries that you are able to fish year round. Since it is a tailwater fishery and has a spring fed influence it stays rather ice free on the upper reaches. Please remember the upper reaches are closed from Clark Canyon Dam down to Pipe Organ Bridge until the 3rd Saturday of May. Currently, you can fish from Pipe Organ Bridge down stream to Barretts park. As far as snowpack goes we are seeing an average winter so far. Clark Canyon Reservoir is currently 82 % full. The Outflow from Clark Canyon reservoir is 88 cfs and the inflow is 182 cfs. When spring runoff hits we might see a full reservoir this year. This all bodes well for a great season on the Beaverhead River.

Mid Winter Update – Sale Items – Spring Special

It is late January here on the Big Hole River. The river is frozen over as it typically is in January. You will not find open water unless springs are entering the river or you have a high gradient zone. As far as snowpack goes we are seeing an average winter so far. The Big Hole watershed is at 97% of normal snowpack. So what does this mean for water levels this spring and summer? It is way too early to predict water levels for the 2020 season. It is not until late February and mid March that we will know more on snowpack. The next two months can be our wettest months of the year for snowpack.
