Beaverhead River Fishing Report

Fishing has been good below clark Canyon Dam on the Beaverhead. Due to this rain Clark Canyon Creek might be dirty and Grasshopper Creek will definitely have some color to it due to runoff. From the Dam down you will have clear fishable water until the creeks enter. We are using nymphs right now on the Beaverhead. Sow bugs, scuds and midges are the best nymphs. Streamers and worms have also been good on the lower stretches.

Currently we are in Stage 1 restrictions due to Covid-19. Governor Bullock announced yesterday that the state of Montana will move to Stage 2 Restrictions on June 1st. Big news for us outfitters since this will remove travel restrictions and 14-day quarantine requirements in Montana.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

General Fishing Season opens this weekend. The Beaverhead Rive is opening from Clark Canyon Dam down stream this Saturday May 16th. The outflow from Clark Canyon Reservoir is 424 cfs. You will find the fish eating soft hackle sow bugs, scuds, and the occasional worm. Streamer fishing might be pretty good since the fish haven’t had pressure. It should not be too busy down there since people entering the state of Montana have to quarantine 14 days before fishing. If you are a Montana resident enjoy the opener of the Beaverhead River this weekend.

We have been doing well on Blue Winged Olive Nymphs, Sow Bugs and midges above grasshopper Creek. Clark Canyon has an outflow of 90 cfs and Clark Canyon Reservoir is 90% full.

We have a pick up window on the porch of our shop for online “pick up” orders or for folks that want to shop through the window and not come into the shop. We are keeping the shop sanitized and employees are using all precautions possible during this time period. Below are the precautions we are taking.

Limited campground offerings, group-use facilities and playgrounds, may be opened at the discretion of local and state managers. Local, state and federal officials are strongly encouraged to coordinate on all reopening decisions. Guides and outfitters may offer services consistent with any ongoing quarantine travel restrictions provided they adhere to social distancing guidelines and sanitation protocols. Visitors should check the status of any closures and restrictions before traveling.

COVID-19 Update

As we all know, COVID-19 is a major health risk and everyone needs to do their part to help stop the spread of the virus.

As important as it is to stay informed about the Coronavirus and take steps to protect yourself, it is also healthy to have an outlet. Fishing, if done while practicing safe social distancing, is a great way to escape from all of the stresses these unprecedented times can cause.

We here at the Sunrise Fly Shop want to help you get all of the gear that you might need for your spring fishing in Southwest Montana, but in order to help stop the spread of the virus, we will need to conduct business just a little differently.

FLY SHOP

In an effort to protect our customer, our employees, and our families, the fly shop will not be open in a traditional retail store capacity. All orders will need to be placed either online or over the phone. The shop will be open starting on March 28^th for Online Store Pick Up and Telephone Orders Only (406) 835-3474. Coming later this week we will have preselected “flies of the week”. These prepackaged flies will be hand selected by our shop staff for the week’s conditions and will be available for online and phone orders. We will be happy to hand select any of our flies in stock for store pickup or mail order. Keep a look out for these fly packages starting in April. Nearly all of our products will be available online, but if you are looking for a specific item that you don’t see online, just give the shop a call and we can put together an order over the phone.

Our online store is open now, so head to https://shop.sunriseflyshop.com and see what new gear you might need for this spring. You can even pre-order for a March 28^th pick-up. Additionally, if you are in Melrose and you need something from the shop and you haven’t placed an order, just knock on the door. If we are able to maintain safe social distancing, we will be happy to help you get any product or advice that you might need.

Temporarily, think of us like a To-Go Fly Shop.

We will be conducting business in this unorthodox manner until we have assurances that person-to-person contact is once again safe.

LICENSES

If you need to get a 2020 Montana fishing license we suggest that you go to the Montana FWP website and purchase a license online https://app.mt.gov/als/index/index.html

For the time being, we will not be able to sell hunting or fishing licenses at the fly shop.

SHUTTLES

Unfortunately, at this time we will not be running shuttles. We are currently exploring ways to run shuttles while keeping both our customers and our employees safe from exposure to the virus but we have yet to come up with a safe solution.

OTHER SERVICES

Butte-Silver Bow County has ordered that all bars and restaurants shall be closed. That means that both the Melrose Bar and the Hitchin’ Post are not open for business. You can still get fuel at the Melrose Bar if you have a credit card.

FISHING REPORT

The Beaverhead River is in good shape. Remember it is closed to fishing from Clark Canyon Dam down to Pipe Organ Bridge until the 3rd Saturday of May. The river is fishing well below Pipe Organ Bridge. On the warmer days we are seeing great midge hatches. Sub surface we are doing well on midge nymphs. For about an hour or two the streamer fishing can be good with a deep slow moving streamer.
