Winter Update and Job Posting

Winter is finally in full swing in Southwest Montana. our freestone rivers are locked up and frozen and some of the tailwaters have fishing opportunity. Snowpack is hovering around 110% for the Big Hole and Beaverhead drainages. We still have a lot of winter left and it is way to early to predict river flows for Spring 2022.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

Clarity has diminished on the Beaverhead River due to Clark Canyon Reservoir being only 30% full and the reservoir has turned over. Flows this morning out of the reservoir are 350cfs and dropping. The only luck we have had lately is on hoppers on the Beaverhead. You might also have some luck on Trico’s near the dam. Fishing has been tough and hopefully improves for us. The clarity needs to improve out of the reservoir before things get better.

No fishing restrictions above Tash Bridge to the Dam

Fishing Restrictions on the Beaverhead:

From the mouth to Hwy 91 S (Tash) downstream Hoot Owl fishing Restrictions

The hoot-owl fishing restriction, which prohibits fishing each day between 2 p.m. and midnight, will be in effect on portions of the Beaverhead River from the mouth to Hwy 91 S (Tash).

The Beaverhead River has been fishing well lately. Flows are currently high with an outflow from Clark Canyon Reservoir of 808cfs. We have been seeing the start of the PMD hatch on the Beaverhead. Nymphing has been the name of the game but look for the dry fly fishing to pick up soon. You will also find Yellow Sallies in the week ahead. Caddis are hatching during the evening, which has made for exciting dry fly fishing.

Lodging is available June 20th – 27th. Give us a call to book your reservation 406-835-3474

The Beaverhead River has been fishing well lately. We have been fishing from the dam down to Grasshopper Creek. Below Grasshopper creek is off color due to snowmelt. We are not finding dry fly fishing but the nymphing has been consistent. We are doing well with sow bugs, scuds and jig head nymphs. Flows out of Clark Canyon Reservoir are low right now. The wade fishing has been easy in all areas of the river.

The Beaverhead has been fishing well below Pipe Organ Bridge. Flows are low so leave the boat home and wade fish. We have done well nymphing sow bugs, blue winged olive nymphs and caddis nymphs. Remember that the upper Beaverhead River is closed from the Dam to Pip Organ Bridge until the 3rd Saturday of May to let the rainbows Spawn. Below Grasshopper Creek has been muddy so call for up to date information on the clarity down below Grasshopper Creek.

We have the new Scott Centric  9 ft. 5 weights 905-4 and 9ft. 6 weight 906-4 fly rods in stock!

Looks like we are down to winter flows on the Beaverhead River. It has been a great year on the Beaverhead and the fish are very healthy moving into fall and winter. They have dropped the outflows of Clark Canyon Reservoir to 50 cfs. It is a wade fishing only proposition now on the Beaverhead. The river is fishing well and running clear. It is rather easy to identify where the fish are at these low flows. You will find hatches of Blue Winged Olives right now. Check out our Fall Special fishing packages.

The Beaverhead has slowed down dramatically recently. We are having tough fishing from the Dam down to barretts. The flows have dropped and the water coming out of the reservoir is off color and tons of moss is floating down stream. It is hard to fish anything other than a dry fly and maybe a streamer. If you throw any nymphs you will picking up a moss salad. Hopefully this improves but for now we suggest fishing elsewhere. Check out the new Scott Centric fly rod. We have them in stock and we are ready to ship them out.

You will find trico’s up near the dam right now and the best terrestrial fishing on the lower sections around Pipe Organ Bridge. Flows are dropping out of the reservoir as irrigation season is winding down. All Hoot-Owl closures on our local rivers have been up lifted. The Beaverhead has been fishing well recently for us. We have moved into Crane Fly season and hopper season. You will find great cranefly fishing in the early morning hours and during the days that are overcast. Make sure you get tight to the banks and give them a twitch and you should be awarded with an explosive eat. The outflow below Clark Canyon Reservoir is 520cfs and steady right now. You will also find trico’s hatching up in the slick near the dam. You can have fun stalking large fish rise in the mornings to trico’s.

“Hoot-Owl” restrictions prohibit fishing during the hottest times of the day. A hoot-owl restriction prohibiting fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight. the Hoot-owl restriction is currently in effect in the below locations on the Beaverhead River.

-The lower Beaverhead River from Anderson Lane to the Jefferson River.

The section that is open to all day fishing with no restrictions is from the Dam down to Anderson Lane fishing access site. If you need clarification of this location please call the shop 406-412-3463.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

Fishing has been pretty good on the Beaverhead. We are still seeing some hatches of PMD’s, Caddis and Yellow Sallies but the hatches are diminishing. We will start moving into Trico’s below the dam and hoppers and ant’s on the lower river. We are also seeing some crane fly activity on the Beaverhead. Look for the crane fly and hopper fishing to pick up dramatically over the next week. Flows out of Clark Canyon Reservoir are currently steady at 660 cfs.
