Fishing has been a bit all over the board lately.

Fishing has been a bit all over the board lately. The clear sunny days have been tough, but the overcast damp days have had the larger brown trout on the prowl. You will find some hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns lately. The streamer fisherman have done well during the low light times. Streamers of choice have been J.J’s, Flash Minnows in olive and black, Little Kim’s and tan Home Invaders. the lower Big Hole below Melrose is seeing a nice bump in flows. Fall fishing is here and it is time to get your streamer box out and enjoy the last six weeks of trout fishing season on the wonderful Big Hole River.

It’s spring and conditions can change quickly for the better or worse

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

It’s spring and conditions can change quickly for the better or worse. Yesterday conditions changed for the worse. The upper Big Hole ice off event is currently underway. Ice is breaking up on the upper Big Hole, which has turned the river to about only a foot of visibility and the water temperatures have dropped significantly. We will keep you updated when conditions improve. It should be a few days before the river starts to clear up.

Spring Special guided fishing details are here. Packages starting at $595 per person

Fall fishing has been pretty good on the Big Hole.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

Fall fishing has been pretty good on the Big Hole. Uncrowded waters and scenery you usually find painted on canvas has this month a must to fish in Montana. Flows on the Big Hole are excellent and the brown trout have been willing to move to streamers and nymphs lately as they get ready to spawn. We also have some hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns. Look for the fish hanging out in the tail-outs of the runs and the shallow edges of the runs. Dust off that streamer box and get out for some fall fishing before winter sets into Southwest Montana.

Big Hole Rive Spring Fishing Report

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

We experienced a dramatic change in weather last week.  After a week of record high heat and rising river flows, we had a massive cold-front move in and deliver colder temps, rain, sleet, snow and wind.  Once the front passed and a more stable low-pressure system settled in, the water dropped and cleared, and the Big Hole River trout really started eating.  Reports from our guides have been solid, with most fish being caught on dead drifted yellow streamers, Pat’s Rubber Legs, and San Juan Worms.  A number of BWO’s and Drakes have been hatching over the last few days, but the trout don’t seem to be keyed in on the May Flies quite yet.

Below are a couple of nice fish landed over the last couple days.

Recommended Flies : #6 San Juan Worm; #12 Pheasant Tail #12 Prince Nymph; #10 Pat’s Stone Brown/Green; #10 Mr. Beam Skwala #10 Bullet Head Skwala #8 J.J. Special #10 Sparkle Minnow; #4 Sunrise Sculpzilla  #6 Yellow Zonker

Perfect Spring Conditions

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

The Big Hole River is in prime condition and is fishing amazingly well.  Even though we haven’t seen a lot of adult Skwallas, the fish are looking up and eating Skwalla patterns on the surface.  And if you are willing to drop a nymph off of your dry fly, the action becomes even more intense.  If that wasn’t enough, fish are also chasing yellow and brown streamers.  Spring fishing couldn’t be better!

Below is a fish that our client Woody caught yesterday.
