Big Hole River Fishing Report

Here we are in July and the Big Hole is over 4,000cfs. June was a rollercoaster month and we are looking forward to dropping flows on the Big Hole River. The river has crested from this last rain/snow event. It looks like the weather is going to dry out and the Big Hole will be in fantastic shape for the month of July. We have hatches of Golden Stone’s, PMD’s, Caddis, Drakes and Yellow Sallies. When conditions are right the dry fly fishing the next several days should be stellar. The streamer fisherman are excited having these high flows to chuck streamers. Look for the Big Hole to continue to drop and fishing to get very good from Maiden Rock down stream.

Big Hole River Salmonfly Hatch Update

The Big Hole has been fishing fantastic lately. The Salmonfly hatch has not let us down one bit. Some of the best dry fly fishing of the year has been had lately depending on the time of day and the stretch of river that you are on. You will find Salmonflies and golden stones hatching below East Bank and all the way down into the Maiden Rock Canyon. We also have PMD’s and caddis hatching throughout the day. Streamers have also been good in the evening hours. Looks like we are getting moisture early this week and then some drier weather later in the week. The river is currently at a stable flow and visibility is around 4 feet.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Salmonfly Hatch has started below Melrose. Our guides had some of the best fishing of their careers yesterday below Melrose. I’m sure everyone has heard the saying, “should have been here yesterday.” Don’t worry if you weren’t you haven’t missed the hatch above Melrose. We have spotted the Salmonflies below Melrose but stretches above Melrose have not had adult Salmonflies yet. With this cooler weather and increase in river flows the hatch will take a pause until our next warm up. Looks like mid to late week it will be game on! Salmonfly nymphs are staged up near the banks in the Maiden Rock canyon waiting to hatch. You will want to be here in the next 10 days to enjoy the Salmonfly hatch.

We have seen peak flows on the Big Hole River this week from runoff. So what does that mean? Salmonflies will be here soon, in fact any day now we will see the big bugs below Melrose. Flows have dropped below 5,000cfs at the Melrose gauge. Once the Melrose gauge gets below 4,000cfs your typical willow lines and banks will be fishable. Water temperatures are right in line for the salmonfly nymphs to be moving near the banks. We have been out the last few days below Melrose and we are picking up fish on salmonfly nymphs. Any day now we will be throwing massive foam flies into the willows and banks expecting explosive eats on the surface. Once the hatch starts we will let you know. Streamers and nymphs are the name of the game right.

2020 Salmonfly Fest has been canceled due to the risk of Covid-19. We are going to be having some great raffle items to help celebrate the annual event. Stay tuned for raffle items coming this week announced on instagram and on our fishing reports page.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

We are in the middle of a caddis frenzy on the Big Hole. The river has dropped to a great level and cleared, with over 2 feet of visibility. You will find the best caddis dry fly fishing towards evening or on a cloudy overcast day. Around Melrose you will have to find back eddies or back channels to fish the dries. On the upper Big Hole where we have less volume of water and the gradient is less, you will have fish up eating caddis when conditions are right on the slow grassy banks. The streamer fishing has been good river wide lately and the nymph anglers have been cleaning up with heavy tippet.

Currently we are in Stage 1 restrictions due to Covid-19. Governor Bullock announced yesterday that the state of Montana will move to Stage 2 Restrictions on June 1st. Big news for us outfitters since this will remove travel restrictions and 14-day quarantine requirements in Montana.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

Due to rain and snowmelt the Big Hole is not looking like a good option this morning. The river has come up about 1,000 cfs in 24 hours at the Mudd Creek gauge site. Today is a great day to head to tailwaters to fish or take a risky shot to catch a fish on the Big Hole. Conditions should improve soon. We will keep you posted as the river comes into better shape.

The Big Hole is currently in great shape. Clarity is around 2 feet and currently the river is stable. Streamer fishing in the canyon sections and lower river has been very good for anglers this week. We should see the fishing continue to be good into the weekend as we have a pretty stable weather pattern. Caddis should start hatching on the lower Big Hole any day now. We have seen March brown’s hatching and some Blue Winged Olives. The best fishing has remained subsurface with nymphs and streamers lately. Pat’s stoneflies, jig head pheasant tail nymphs and streamers have been the ticket.

Currently we are in Phase 1 Business Requirements 

  • A 14 day quarantine for non resident business travelers will remain in effect. If residents or non residents leave the state of Montana and then come back into Montana they are required to self isolate and quarantine for 14 days before being able to visit a retail store or go on a guided fishing trip. Once the ongoing quarantine travel restriction requirements have been met, guides and outfitters may offer their services provided they adhere to social distancing guidelines and sanitation protocols.  Governor Bullock said “While we love our visitors, we would ask that you not come visit while Montanans are watching out for one another by staying at home. This is important not only to protect our health care system, but also to protect against the spread of COVID-19. As of today, travel from another state or country is the most common known source of COVID-19 infections in Montana. Big Hole Fishing Report

Fishing has picked up on the Big Hole. We are in a great window of spring fishing for the next several days. We have a stable weather pattern and the river has dropped and cleared. Fishing around Melrose has been good. We have not had dry fly fishing but the streamer bite and nymph action has been very productive. Look for the slower seems and edges of banks and you will find the fish. Our best streamers have been dark colored and the yellow favorites for the Big Hole. A few skwallas are still kicking around but we will be waiting for Caddis on the lower river soon.

Big Hole River Fishing Report

The Big Hole River is off color due to the warm weather we have been having. This is not high elevation snowmelt runoff. The snow that is melting is valley floor and low to mid elevation snowpack. Once the river flushes this out it will clear and the fishing will be very good. We do not know when this will be, so we will keep you posted. The weather is nice for a float right now though. We have seen skwallas and March brown’s hatching as of late. The best tactic right now has been either streamers tight to the banks or a worm off the bank below a skwalla dry fly.

We have a pick up window on the porch of our shop for online “pick up” orders or for folks that want to shop through the window and not come into the shop. We are keeping the shop sanitized and employees are using all precautions possible during this time period. Below are the precautions we are taking.

Shop Opens Monday April 27th

On Wednesday, Montana Governor Steve Bullock announced that the state of Montana is going to follow a 3-phase guideline to reopen the economy. Part of that guideline stated that nonessential businesses would be allowed to reopen at a limited capacity on Monday, April 27th.

Sunrise Fly Shop will be opening its doors for the first time this season on Monday, April 27th. Because of the fallout of the global pandemic, we will be operating within our Governor’s guidelines for this changed retail environment. We will have guidelines outside of or shop for customers to follow when coming into the shop. We will also have curbside pick and a pick up window on our porch for online orders or phone orders 406-835-3474.

The plan that the Governor has set into motion will start with Stage 1 of a 3-stage process. Stage 1 will have the strictest guidelines. As we move through the phases to reopen the economy, some rules will be relaxed.

Big Hole Report

Currently the Big Hole is of color and not fishing well. The upper river’s ice has broken free and the river is on the rise and dirty. This is the valley floor and low elevation snowpack melting. Once we get this out of the way fishing will be very good. We will keep you posted when the river is clearing and dropping in flows. It is time to head over to the tailwater fisheries in our state.

Beaverhead River Fishing Report

The Beaverhead River is fishing well below Pipe Organ Bridge. Grasshopper Creek is muddy causing the Beaverhead to be off color and not fishing well.

The only clear and fishable water right now is from Pipe Organ Bridge down to where Grasshopper Creek enters the Beaverhead. Call us anytime
