Beaverhead River Fishing Report

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

The Beaverhead River is currently fishing pretty good from Pipe Organ Bridge down to Grasshopper Creek. Below Grasshopper Creek the river is pretty darn muddy due to runoff in the Grasshopper Valley. This can change daily so please check in with us on the most current clarity of Grasshopper Creek. Our best flies below Pipe Organ Bridge has been midge nymphs, sow bugs, and blue wing nymphs. On the warmer day we have  had good streamer fishing during the heat of the day.

Reminder that from the Dam down to Pipe Organ Bridge is closed until the 3rd Saturday of May.

Recommended Flies:

#18 Shop Vac; #18 Green Machine; #16 Soft Hackle Sow Bug; #16 Zebra Midge; #10 San Juan Worm; #6 J.J. Special; #6 Sparkle Minnow

Time to kick off the 2019 fishing season on the Big Hole River.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

Time to kick off the 2019 fishing season on the Big Hole River. The shop will officially open April 1st and we are running shuttles tomorrow if you need one just give us a call. We got out and fished and had pretty good success below Melrose during the afternoon heat of the day hours. Mainly subsurface on Skwala nymphs and streamers moving very slow in deep buckets. We have lots of ice on the banks and most of the sections are still not floatable due to ice shelves on the boat ramps and snow in the boat ramps. Currently the only sections we can float are Melrose to Brownes Bridge and Jerry creek to George Grant (Dewey). As the thaw continues we will keep you up to date on when more sections open up to float fishing. Lots of new gear and flies are coming in daily and some remodeling is going on in the fly shop. Our lodging is open and currently taking reservations.

Some April/May dates are still open for out Spring Special. Details Here.

Guide trips are heading out tomorrow!

Sunrise Fly Shop opens April 1st! We got out on the Beaverhead the other day and it fished very well in there afternoon. The morning was slow due to cold weather but as soon as the water stopped freezing on our guides we were into fish the rest of the day. All subsurface nymphing and slow stripping streamers. The Blue Winged Olives are about to hatch as we found many nymphs in the water column.

The Dam down to Pipe Organ Bridge is closed until the 3rd Saturday of May. Currently, you must float or wade fish below Pipe Organ Bridge.

Winer Update: Spring Special

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

We just got another blast of winter here in Southwest Montana. We woke this morning to -20 degree air temperatures. Our snowpack for the Big Hole drainage is hovering around 95% for this date in time. We still have plenty of winter left but we are all itching for spring trout fishing. Depending on when the ice gets off the Big Hole our Spring season is about 7 weeks away. We will have hatches of Skwalas and Blue winged olives to start the season. Our spring special packages are available again. We are excited to have our lodging to offer for the spring packages. Click here for more information on spring fishing packages.

Winter Update: Spring Special

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”0-12-0″][eye_text]

The Beaverhead River is predicted to have a banner season for us. Clark Canyon Reservoir is 90% full for this date in time and when we have runoff in the spring it should fill to capacity. We will have excellent flows this season on the Beaverhead. Our winter flows on the Beaverhead have been around 200cfs which is fantastic for the trout. The winters we have had in the past when flows remain above 100cfs has allowed the fish to grow and stay healthy, also it has helped the fish habitat and bug life. Our spring fishing packages are available again. We are excited to have our own lodging this spring for our clients. Click here for more information.

Fall fishing on the Big Hole River has been pretty good for us so far this month.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”7″][eye_text]

Fall fishing on the Big Hole River has been pretty good for us so far this month. River flows are in excellent shape and the trout have been healthy this season. Our fall hatches are winding down for the year. On the warmer afternoons you will find some Blue Winged Olives and mahogany duns. On the cold days you will need to stay subsurface with nymphs and streamers. Your best window of active fish feeding is around 10:00 am to 4:00pm. Darker streamers have been working the best lately for us. Time to get the last couple floats of the year in before winter is here.

Fall is in full swing on the Big Hole River.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”7″][eye_text]

Fall is in full swing on the Big Hole River. This is an amazing time of year. We are currently seeing the peak foliage of the cottonwoods lining the banks. If you are lucky you can see elk along some of the Big Hole River meadows, moose and plenty of water foul. As far as fishing, we have some of our best days this time of year. The brown trout are packing on the pounds before the spawn. Streamers are working in full force. Flash minnows, J.J.’s, Little Kim’s and Home Invaders are all doing well with the streamer fisherman. Some of the warmer overcast days we have had Blue Winged olives and mahogany duns keeping the dry fly enthusiasts happy. Nymphing has been active with Pat’s stones, micro mayflies and psycho mayflies.

Fishing has been a bit all over the board lately.

[eye_row data_width=”container”][eye_column data_width=”7″][eye_text]

You will find some hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns lately. The streamer fisherman have done well during the low light times. Streamers of choice have been J.J’s, Flash Minnows in olive and black, Little Kim’s and tan Home Invaders. the lower Big Hole below Melrose is seeing a nice bump in flows. Fall fishing is here and it is time to get your streamer box out and enjoy the last six weeks of trout fishing season on the wonderful Big Hole River.
